Concert: Black Joe Lewis

Black Joe Lewis onstage at DC9

Headliner: Black Joe Lewis (Genre: blues, funk, soul)

Opening Act(s): Annabelle Chairlegs

Venue: DC9 Nightclub

Thoughts: I missed the opener, so can not comment on them. I got to DC9 just before Black Joe Lewis took the stage. I did not have an issue finding a spot, however, shortly after the band took the stage the room filled up fast. This was not a sold out show, but I’ve been to a sold out show at DC9, and it seemed pretty close. It was very hot when the band first started. I’m not sure if they eventually turned on the air, or if it just got cooler the closer to the stage I got, but by the end, it wasn’t bad. The band was great, people were dancing, there was a diverse age group, but everyone was into it. Joe talked about how he had played DC9 after the release of his first album, and how much the area has changed over the years. The band all seemed in good spirits, with the tenor saxophonist continually trying to get the crowd involved. I used to play the saxophone (not well), so I am partial to the instrument, and enjoyed listening to the tenor and baritone sax rock out. The blues, funk sound was just perfect for a place like DC9; you could have a drink, dance, not give a shit. It was just a highly enjoyable show. When I think that this concert only cost me about $20, I can’t believe what great entertainment is available for a modest price. Instead of staying in or just going to a regular bar, I got to see this band jam out, and it was well worth the cost of admission.
