Summary in three words: Fuse is lit

Reaction: Obviously I watch too much Netflix, but since they keep raising the price, I might as well get my money’s worth. The reason my three word summary is fuse is lit is because a character in this show is at one point referred to as a fuse, and I think its an apt metaphor for what this series hopes to accomplish. In any superhero or fantasy series, there is a fair amount of world building that needs to occur. I would say this is one of the key differences between Marvel Cinematic Universe and what DC Comics has done. Marvel took a very slow and deliberate approach when introducing their characters and fleshing out their world, while DC does not. It might seem obvious that slow and deliberate is better, but it is also very risky. If Iron Man had tanked at the Box Office, all of the following movies might not have happened. The Umbrella Academy needs to set the stage for future seasons, and on that account the first season succeeded. I knew nothing about this series going in, and kept nodding off during the first three episodes. That was not only because I was tired, but the first three episodes are boring, and don’t really tell you what is happening. If you want to skip or sleep through them, feel free. The show picks up, though, and the characters get increasingly interesting. I was a fan of the Marvel shows that were on Netflix before they all got removed, but some of those had really dropped in quality as they continued. This is a similar type of show, that centers around children that were all born on the same day and exhibit supernatural abilities. The children are all adopted by one man, who turns them into a team, but his overall ambitions are less clear. If you are a fan of the superhero genre, this is worth a watch.
