Today is my 31st birthday. Got to admit, kind of a downer to think a decade ago today was my 21st birthday, which is one of the more fun birthdays you get. 31st I anticipate to be a bit more tame. Tonight, I’m going to dinner with some friends at Brick Lane (shown above) which is one of my favorite restaurants in DC.
Whenever you start writing you don’t know what you’re going to get. I started this blog, with the goal of having it be a place where my friends could get updates from me (hence the name My Events) because at this point I’m off of all other social media. However, it is quickly snowballing into a place where I take account of the things that have recently happened in my life and sort through them. On that note, I would like to look back at the past year.
Some years are more predictable than others. This year, the goal was really about developing a routine, and so I felt like I knew how it would play out, to some degree. A few months before my 30th birthday I purchased an apartment, and shortly after that I adopted Simi, my dog (shown below). Both were major changes in my life. The apartment has been great, but anytime you move and are in a new area, it takes several months to adapt. At this point, it really feels like home. My new apartment was also featured on the local news because it ended up being tied into a renter scam, which was interesting (more on that story in a future post). Simi has been the biggest change in my life. We have a good routine now, but again, it took some time. Dogs are great but they are a large commitment. Simi was only 5 months when I adopted her, and needed a lot of attention and training. She is easily the focal point of this past year. Figuring out the vet, dog walker, daycare, dog park, food, treats and how to get her home for holidays has been an…enlightening(?) experience. Overall, this past year has not been crazy, wild, or tremendously exciting, but it has been perfect in a lot of ways. I feel that I have progressed at work, I love that I have gotten involved in the running, and, although this is new, I’m glad to have started a blog. Some years are less about change and are more about finding your rhythm, and I believe I successfully accomplished that this year. Not trying to say my life is perfect, far from, but life is never perfect. All you can do is try to progress toward your goals as best you can, and in that regard I consider year 30 to have been productive.
Some quick thoughts on heading into year 31. My sister, who has also lived in the DC area for the past several years, is moving back to our hometown (Rochester NY) at the end of the month. The work project that I have been supporting for the past 8 months literally ended this morning. And my current focus is training for a marathon in Berlin, a country I have never been to. That being said I expect this to be a year of change, and personally, I’m excited about it. I’m glad I feel so comfortable now, but I’m ready for a challenge. I predict this will be a great year. Forget what I said at the top of this post. Screw you age 21, 31 is about to be a blast.
