Concert: Tokyo Police Club

Tokyo Police Club performing Bambi at DC9

Last night went to go see a band called Tokyo Police Club. I was surprised to hear they were still touring. My only familiarity with this band is from several years ago when the song Bambi was recommended to me by a friend. That song was played on my iPod on repeat for a while before my iPod was tragically misplaced when after a few drinks I challenged a man in a public park to a chess match. My memory is hazy but I’m clear that I lost the match and my iPod was never seen again.

The first thing I would like to highlight from the concert was the opener Dizzy. I had never heard of this band, they appear to be a pretty young group (or I’m just getting older) but they had a great sound. I tried searching what the band is classified as and found them under the category of melodic dream pop. Since I do not know what that means I will say they had a calm, non-aggressive, synthesized sound. The lead vocalist, Katie Munshaw’s voice reminded me of Dido just in its distinct pretty quality, with a more hipster stage presence found in bands like MisterWives (although less energetic). I will continue to follow the progress of Dizzy as a band

Tokyo Police Club was the kind of show I was expecting going in. There were songs I found unique like the aforementioned Bambi but otherwise, their sound was alternative rock. Don’t get me wrong, I think they put on a great live show I just don’t see myself listening to more than a few songs from this band. I would, however, definitely go see them again live. Great energy in the room, sounded great, and overall just a fun show to be at.

Lastly, I had never previously been to a show at DC9 which kind of surprised me. I assumed I must have been there at some point over the years but that was not the case. As far as a venue, it’s a very intimate experience, only 149 maximum capacity in the showroom. The bands were selling their own merchandise after the show and TPC ventured into the crowd during their performance. The room at full capacity got a little uncomfortable at times but that will not prevent me from taking in more concerts here in the future.
